MacBook Air M5 vs MacBook Neo: Price, Specs & Best Pick
MacBook Air M5 vs MacBook Neo – Which One Actually Makes Sense for You?
Last week my cousin from Bhavnagar called me. He is in 3rd year engineering and his old Windows laptop finally died in this heat.
He said, “Bhavik, Apple launched two laptops? One is Air M5 and one is Neo? Confusion che.”
And he is not alone. I saw the same question in 4-5 DMs on Instagram.
Apple did something they never did before. In March 2026, they launched two laptops together. The powerful, familiar MacBook Air with M5 chip, and a brand new, colorful, affordable MacBook Neo with an iPhone chip inside.
So I sat down, checked official Apple specs, MacRumors, Gadgets360 India pricing, and all the early reviews. This is not a spec-sheet dump. This is what actually matters if you are buying in India.
Quick Summary
- MacBook Air M5 is the safe, powerful choice. 13 and 15-inch, M5 chip, 512GB base storage now, Wi-Fi 7, and battery that easily lasts a full day of college or office.
- MacBook Neo is Apple’s new entry-level laptop. 13-inch only, runs on A18 Pro chip (same as iPhone 16 Pro), starts at $599 in US, much cheaper in India than any MacBook before. Made for students, online classes, writing, browsing, and light work.
- If you need power for editing, coding, or long-term use, Air M5 wins. If you want your first MacBook under ₹70,000, Neo is the one Apple made for you.

How I Evaluated This
I compared these on what matters for Indian buyers, not just what looks good on paper:
- Performance: Real apps we use – Chrome with 15 tabs, VS Code, Canva, Final Cut, Zoom
- Battery: Mixed use in Indian conditions, heat and power cuts included
- Display: For long study sessions and Netflix
- Keyboard & Portability: For backpack and long commutes
- Price & Value: Amazon India, Flipkart, Apple Store India pricing, plus bank offers
- Service Network: Apple service in Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Delhi
- Long-term value: Resale after 2-3 years and macOS updates
Price in India – The Real Difference
This is where the story changes.
MacBook Air M5 (2026):
- US price starts at $1099
- India price: ₹1,07,900 for 13-inch, 512GB base variant
- 15-inch starts around ₹1,24,900 on Apple India
- On Amazon India with HDFC card, you will see around ₹1,02,900 during sales
MacBook Neo (2026):
- US price started at $599, now $699 after recent price hike
- India price: ₹59,900 (base 8GB / 256GB) – Apple’s cheapest laptop ever
- Student discount makes it ₹54,900
That’s a ₹48,000 difference. For a middle-class family, that is huge.
Design and Build
Both look like MacBooks, but they feel different.
Air M5 continues the same thin design as M4. No redesign this year. Four colors – Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, Silver. Full aluminium body, 1.24kg for 13-inch.
Neo is new. 13-inch only, a bit thicker, but still light. And colors! Silver, Blush (light pink), Citrus (light yellow), and Indigo (deep blue). It is clearly made for students who want something fun, not just office silver.
Both have Touch ID, no Touch Bar, and the same good keyboard.

Bhavik’s Note
I noticed Neo uses more recycled aluminium but has slightly more flex on the lid. Not bad, but if you travel daily in a crowded bus or train, Air M5 feels more solid in hand.
Performance – M5 vs A18 Pro Explained Simply
Now here’s where things get interesting.
M5 chip: This is a proper laptop chip, built on 3nm process. 10-core CPU and GPU. Think of it as a Scorpio engine.
A18 Pro chip: This is an iPhone chip put into a laptop. 6-core CPU. Think of it as a very efficient Swift engine. Fast for daily work, but not made for heavy lifting.
What does this mean for you?
- Students (BCom, BBA, BA, 11th-12th): Neo is more than enough. Google Docs, Zoom, YouTube, Canva, even light Python.
- Engineering / Coding students: Air M5 is worth it. Compiling code, Android Studio, Docker, all run much faster.
- Creators: If you edit 4K video or Lightroom photos, Air M5 is 2.5x faster in exports. Neo will lag.
There’s another reason Air M5 pulls ahead. Base storage is now 512GB. Neo starts at 256GB. With 256GB, you will be managing storage every 3 months.

Display and Speakers
Both have 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. 500 nits brightness.
But Air M5 supports one more external display and has better speakers. If you connect to a monitor in office or at home, Air M5 is better.
Neo display is still great for the price. For online classes and Netflix, you won’t complain.
Battery Life and Heat
This surprised me most.
Neo, with iPhone chip, is insanely efficient. Apple claims 18 hours. In real use, 14-15 hours easily. And it stays cool even in May heat in Gujarat.
Air M5 also gives 15-16 hours but can get warm when you push it. Both are fanless, so zero fan noise. Perfect for library.

Who Should Buy This?
Buy MacBook Air M5 if you are:
- Engineering, IT, or design student
- Video editor, photographer, or YouTuber
- Working professional who needs laptop for 4-5 years
- Someone who uses external monitor
Buy MacBook Neo if you are:
- School student, BBA, BCom, BA student
- Parents buying first laptop for kids
- Someone moving from Chromebook or ₹40k Windows laptop
- You want Mac experience under ₹65k
Who Should Skip This?
Skip Air M5 if your budget is tight and your work is basic. Don’t take EMI pressure for power you won’t use.
Skip Neo if you edit videos, run heavy coding, or need 512GB without paying extra for upgrade. That ₹59,900 will become ₹79,900 after you upgrade RAM and storage.
What I Think
Apple finally understood India. Not everyone can spend ₹1 lakh. Neo is for the crores of students who use Jio internet, pay with UPI, and want a reliable laptop that doesn’t slow down in 1 year.
Longevity Guide
For both laptops, follow this if you want 4+ years:
- Don’t charge to 100% daily. Keep between 20-80% when possible
- Clean dust from ports every month, especially in humid places like Surat
- Use original charger. ₹800 local charger can damage battery
- Keep 15% storage free, otherwise Mac slows down
- Update macOS Tahoe when stable version comes, don’t install beta on main laptop
- For Neo, buy 512GB variant if you can. 256GB will fill fast with college projects
Bhavik’s Final Verdict
If I Were Buying Today
If I were spending my own money today, I’d choose like this:
- For my younger brother in college (BBA): I’d pick MacBook Neo 256GB in Indigo. It’s light, battery is great, and ₹59,900 is honest pricing. Save money and buy AppleCare+.
- For my own work at TechBhavik.com: I’d pick MacBook Air M5 13-inch, 512GB. Because I edit thumbnails, run 20 Chrome tabs, and need that extra power.
There’s a simple rule. If your work earns you money, invest in Air M5. If your work is learning, Neo is more than enough and much better value.
Conclusion
Apple finally gave us a choice. For years, MacBook started at ₹90k+. Now with Neo at ₹59,900, the door is open.
Air M5 is the powerful all-rounder that will not disappoint. Neo is the friendly entry ticket to macOS.
Both will get 6-7 years of updates, both have excellent build, and both will have good service in India.

FAQ
1. Is MacBook Neo good for engineering students in India?
For first year basic work yes, but for CSE/IT with Android Studio, heavy coding, and virtual machines, I would not recommend Neo base variant. Go for Air M5 with 16GB RAM.
2. What is the real price of MacBook Neo in India on Flipkart and Amazon?
Official price is ₹59,900 for 256GB. With student discount ₹54,900. During Big Billion Days on Flipkart, it may drop to ₹52,900 with bank offer.
3. Does MacBook Neo have heating issue in Indian summer?
No, actually Neo runs cooler than Air because A18 Pro is super efficient. It is fanless and I found no major heat complaints even from Mumbai and Chennai users.
4. Is 8GB RAM in MacBook Neo enough in 2026?
For basic use yes, but macOS Tahoe uses more RAM. If you keep laptop for 3+ years, get 16GB upgrade if budget allows. Apple is rumored to bring 12GB in Neo 2 next year.
5. Which has better resale value – Air M5 or Neo?
Air M5 always holds better resale in India. After 2 years, Air M5 will still get ₹70k+ in second-hand market. Neo is new category, so resale is still uncertain.
